Thato Toeba 'cuts' his way at Stevenson Gallery
Cape Times
|October 30, 2025
THE 2025 FNB Art Prize winner, Thato Toeba, is showing their new body of work at Stevenson Gallery in Woodstock until November 29. I attended the opening this past Saturday and briefly caught up with this Maseru-born artist.
Our conversation centred on their art practice, process and how one day they would love to exhibit their work in Lesotho.
"I collect a lot of magazines. So, the collages you see here on show at Stevenson feature no drawings or paintings, they are all hand cut by me. It takes time and serious patience," said Toeba whilst showing me scars on their left hand. Years and years of scars. Why not use a laser cutter, I muttered?
"I actually tried laser cutting whilst I was doing my residency at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, the laser just couldn't get to the corners and edges of my pictures, so I opted to do the cutting manually with box cutters."
