Plea for justice as detective goes silent in twin rape case

A MOTHER of seven-year-old twins from Khayelitsha is speaking out against what she describes as a breakdown in police communication following the alleged sexual assault of her son and daughter by a minor known to the family.

Avela (not her real name), alleges that the lead detective has failed to gather statements from the children, or provide any investigative updates for over four weeks, leaving the family in limbo ahead of a critical court appearance scheduled for Friday at the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court.

According to her, the last contact she had with the investigating officer occurred around January 3. At that time, the detective allegedly informed her that he was en route to her home to interview the twins, but, he never showed up.

“The case was opened with my statement because my children were still shaken and traumatised,” she said.

“I informed the police when they were ready to speak... but I never heard back about when they were coming to collect statements from them”
