Officer saves swimmer at Monwabisi beach

A CITY of Cape Town Law Enforcement Marine Unit officer has been commended after entering rough surf to help rescue a 23-year-old man caught in rip currents at Monwabisi beach on Tuesday.
The incident unfolded shortly after 2.30pm when National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Strandfontein duty crew were alerted to a swimmer in distress.
NSRI Strandfontein station commander, Nicky Whitehead, said emergency services were activated following reports from a local lifeguard.
“Local shark spotters confirmed that there was a drowning in progress in the surf zone at Monwabisi,” Whitehead said.
