Communities demand urgent action over mass shootings

COMMUNITY policing forums are calling on authorities to place pressure on criminal gangs and conduct stop-and-search operations to rid communities of firearms following five mass shootings in Cape Town in less than a week.

- MANDILAKHE TSHWETE

The call comes less than a week since the provincial SAPS launched its Safer Festive Season Operations under Operation Shanela II.

The most recent occurred in Site C, Khayelitsha, on Tuesday night, when two men were killed and another wounded.

Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said the shooting took place in Nkonjane Street at about 11.25pm.

"Khayelitsha police are investigating two counts of murder and one of attempted murder following the incident, in which two males aged 31 and 34 were fatally wounded and a 24-year-old male was injured. The suspect or suspects fled the scene and have not yet been arrested."
