Anger as councillor cleared of misconduct

RESIDENTS from Hanover Park said they were aggrieved by the decision of the City of Cape Town to find ward councillor, Antonio van der Rheede, not guilty of seven charges relating to misconduct, one of which was allegedly dishing out employment for sexual favours.
Van der Rheede was previously charged with the rape of a 27-year-old woman, who claimed he sexually violated her in exchange for employment opportunities.
The criminal matter before the court was dismissed and removed from the roll, citing political interference.
In a detailed report by the City, dated August 21, Van der Rheede pleaded not guilty to the charges put to him by the City.
He was charged with two counts of gross misconduct and five counts of breach of code of conduct for councillors. The disciplinary proceedings were conducted between February 2023 and July 2025.
