The robot bus revolution is here - but it's not in a rush
Cambridge News
|June 30, 2025
WHEN I got my driving licence nearly 10 years ago, the thought that I might one day share the roads with self-driving vehicles felt like something from a futuristic film about robots taking over the planet.
However, it is now a thing of reality for Cambridge locals, who can take a free ride on the autonomous Connector bus.
The bus service is part of a trial run by the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP), Whippet Coaches and Fusion Processing, and several other companies.
As part of its 'soft launch' ahead of its opening to the public on Tuesday (June 24), I got to take a trip on the 15-seat Connector.
The trip did not get off to an auspicious start when a warning light came on, meaning the bus could not take passengers anywhere until it was sorted out.
After about 20 minutes and a passenger-free trial loop, we could finally board the bus.
On board, the bus looks like any other small minibus, with a front driver's seat, space for wheelchair users, and seats arranged on either side of a central aisle.
The bus currently operates with a 'safety driver' on board who can take control if needed, while also making the usual observations they would make if they were driving a standard bus.
