CAMBRIDGE is a city full of renters. I’m proud of the fact our city welcomes graduates to work in our R&D sector, academics from across the globe to our world-class universities, and excellent medical professionals to Addenbrooke's Hospital.

City households will benefit from new Act shaking up renters' rights

And many families, whether they're Cambridge born and bred or relocating, choose to rent thanks to the flexibility it offers.

But for too long, renters have not been adequately protected against a minority of landlords who do not meet their responsibilities.

This unequal relationship between 11 million renters and 2.3 m landlords has led to a host of insecure contracts, unfair evictions, and stressful bidding wars, preventing families and individuals from safely setting up house.

Labour's Renters’ Rights Act, which has just been put into law, will remedy the obstacles which have faced renters in recent years, providing the most significant upgrade to renters’ rights in a generation.

Did you know Cambridge has the fourth-highest number of households renting across the UK?

A total of 54 per cent of us rent - meaning that over half of the constituency will benefit from the new set of rights championed by the government.

From making it easier to house a pet, to ensuring that safety risks are quickly addressed by landlords, we are empowering renters’ step by step.
