President Bongbong Marcos Jr. was wearing pink socks during his visit to Naga City in Bicol region last month.

The choice of color bespeaks both intention and reverence. Others might say disrespect since anything pink worn on the feet symbolizes inferiority or triviality. Either way, especially when the visuals coincided with the fresh announcement of VP Sara Duterte to pursue the presidential post in the 2028 national elections, the gesture was intentional. After all, a pair of socks in pink color is not a usual staple in a man’s wardrobe, except for me who loves pink and yellow (not political) ever since.PBBM was therefore intentional in wearing pink socks—a reverent act as well with full recognition of his former political rival’s campaign color motif. Hence, PBBM said: “The only thing political in this meeting is me wearing these pink socks.”

When controversies hound each personality in a level playing field, imaginative discourse is “in the pink of health,” as healthy as any discussion could be in a democratic arena. This is the same Leni Robredo who vilified the same Bongbong Marcos in their 2016 vice presidential debate anent the purported ill-gotten wealth; the same lady who censured him as a political candidate for failing to show up during their 2022 Presidential debate. Yet again, the same Leni who succinctly verbalized that BBM is “sinungaling sa umpisa hanggang sa huli” (a liar from the beginning until the end).

Speaking of lies, it was the invariable BBM who responded to accusations and “commanded” to stop the tall tales being spread about him. Thus, too, the very same person countered Ms. Robredo’s attacks in 2016 re: ill-gotten wealth, with a statement that “I cannot give what I do not have.”
