MARION McMULLEN recalls how a computer managed to beat a chess Grandmaster for the first time 30 years ago
-
Computers have gone on to show they can certainly beat humans at their own games.
IT was man versus machine three decades ago when Russian world chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov took on IBM supercomputer Deep Blue.
The board was set in February 1996 and the chess champ landed an early blow, taking a pawn in the opening minutes of a six-day chess match at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
Feng hsiung Hsu, the principal designer of Deep Blue, keyed Kasparov's moves into the computer, which was capable of computing a staggering 200 million positions per second.
The calculations helped Deep Blue win the first game of the competition - the first time a computer had beaten a world champion in tournament conditions.
