Ru ready for more after the thrill of debut for Jamaica
RUMARN Burrell will hope to win his second cap for Jamaica tomorrow when they meet Nigeria in the final of the Unity Cup friendly tournament at Brentford.
Burrell scored on his debut for the Reggae Boyz earlier this week against Trinidad & Tobago, also at Brentford, doubling their lead as they went on to a 3-2 win.
It was a spectacular and intuitive effort, as he hooked a ball that was going away from goal back over his head into the net from a narrow angle.
If he comes up with another good performance tomorrow, he will hope to make the cut next week when former Derby County manager Steve McClaren, the Jamaica head coach, trims his initial 60-man squad down to a maximum of 26 for the Concacaf Gold Cup in the Americas from June into July.
It was a scratch squad for the Unity Cup but a good chance for McClaren, appointed in July last year, to assess several players who had not previously played for Jamaica.
And Burrell, especially, impressed the former England manager.
"I'm personally just delighted for Burrell," he said.
"He comes from nowhere and plays for Burton, scoring goals, a bit of an unknown.
"It must have been a huge game for him and his family.
"I know they're all here and what a debut, to score. And that goal is what we saw in him.
"He's always in the six-yard box bouncing around and ready to score and that's a real strength of a number nine. We've been looking for a number nine.
