Summer roadworks Council denies claim closure of route is ‘unlawful’
Bristol Post
|August 14, 2025
SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has denied an accusation that it acted unlawfully in closing roads in Bradley Stoke for works to take place.
Bradley Stoke Way is one of a number of roads managed by the council to be partially closed for long stretches of the summer.
The A38 Gloucester Road flyover and the A4174 Ring Road, at its junction with Coldharbour Lane in Filton, have both also been shut to traffic for multiple weeks. Motorists have complained that some journey times have tripled in length as a result.
Chaos on the roads caused by multiple closures at the same time prompted MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke Claire Hazelgrove to write to the council on August 5 demanding an improvement. A day later, the council issued an apology, saying disruption caused by the flyover closure in particular had been “even worse than expected”.
One Bradley Stoke resident has now suggested that not only has the council erred in arranging for major roadworks to take place simultaneously, but in the case of work in Bradley Stoke they allege the incorrect process was followed.
