T'IS THE SEASON NOT TO DO MUCH SOWING, SAYS TIM FOSTER, BUT YOU COULD ALWAYS DO WITH A BIT MORE LETTUCE...

- WITH TIM FOSTER

SAT down today to make a list for you: what to sow at this time of year.

And while the page wasn’t totally blank, it wasn’t filled either. Here's the list: lettuce.

Depending on a range of factors such as your location, your microcli-mate, your optimism, etc, we could have added one or two others - and where would life be without trying a few experimental sowings? Parsley, chard and peas can be sown in July, meaning, right now, we are on the edge of getting late for those. We are in a virtual no-person's land of vegetable propagation, the like of which only recurs in the depths of winter.

Too late for most things, it is a little early for the winter salads such as rocket, different mustards and pak choi, and leaf coriander and spinach. This year I am going to try all of these crops under cloches.
