NORTH Somerset households face an eye-watering council tax hike after government ministers granted permission for a rise nearly double the usual limit.

The authority says it has been “forced” into the 8.99 per cent increase - one of only seven approved nationally - due to severe cuts in central funding.This will add £13.44 to the North Somerset Council portion of an average Band D property's monthly bill.
