BIRMINGHAM residents hope car-free streets will become a permanent fixture so their children can play outside without fear.

Last month, cars were temporarily blocked from driving down a route in Kings Heath as part of a ‘play street’ initiative.

All traffic was blocked from driving in Poplar Road so pupils from nearby Kings Heath Primary School and surrounding roads could play safely outside - and families said the result was “magic”.

Now, weeks on from the event on May 23, residents are still talking about the impact of having a car-free zone for children - and hope that it will be implemented permanently.

Campaigners say they would like the street to be car-free at set times every day.
