INMATES BACK PRISON OFFICER'S MARATHON BID IN AID OF SPINAL RESEARCH

- NICK HORNER News Reporter

Luke's dash for cash for paralysed mum

Sandra Adams after her accident

A MIDLAND prison officer is to run the London Marathon as a tribute to his mum who suffered a devastating injury in a fall at home which left her paralysed.

Even some of the offenders he supervises will be doing their bit for Spinal Research, too.

Sandra Adams suffered a spinal cord injury after a fall down stairs at home 10 months ago.

The mum-of-four was in intensive care for months and doctors feared she would never come off a ventilator.

The accident caused a serious spinal cord injury, which left her paralysed from the neck down.

After months in intensive care, during which she suffered two cardiac arrests, pneumonia and several lung infections, Sandra was transferred to Sheffield Spinal Injuries Unit.

But Luke Adams, a supervising officer at HMP Young Offenders Institute Swinfen Hall in Lichfield, has been inspired by his mum’s bravery, courage and fighting spirit to take on his own challenge to help her.
