LIGHTING A BARD-ECUE

You're making your RSC debut in Fat Ham as Juicy. Can you tell us a bit about the play and the character of Juicy?

Fat Ham is set at a barbecue in the American South. It’s inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet, using the sequence of events in that play to tell a new story.

I play Juicy, a young queer boy, trying to figure out who he is, who he’s attracted to, in a world that has very fixed ideas about what makes a man a man. On top of that you get the Hamlet story - Juicy’s dad, who has just died, comes back as a ghost claiming that Juicy’s uncle (who has just married Juicy’s mum) had him killed. And Juicy’s dad wants him to avenge his death.
