Ex-smoker grateful for lung cancer screening

A CANCER survivor from Great Barr has encouraged residents to take advantage of a screening programme that helped spot his disease early enough for successful treatment.
Former smoker Noel Cunningham is championing the Lung Cancer Screening Programme, which has reached more than 18,000 Sandwell people since its launch 18 months ago.
Approximately 6,200 people have had scans after being identified as high-risk for developing lung cancer, with the screening detecting a total of 41 people with stage 1 or 2 lung cancer to date. The programme has also uncovered other forms of cancer in a further 14 patients, including breast cancer and bowel cancer.
Mr Cunningham gave up smoking in 2017 after suffering a heart attack.
