‘City officials reluctant to seal bins strike deal’

MAYOR ACCUSES SENIOR OFFICERS OF DRAGGING FEET IN NEGOTIATIONS
THE Mayor of the West Midlands, Richard Parker, made an extraordinary claim that Birmingham City Council's most senior officers ignored political orders and delayed striking a deal to end the bins dispute when they had the chance.
He claimed officers failed to follow the instructions of then-council leader John Cotton to start to lock down a deal with the Unite union ahead of local elections in May.
But senior officers strongly denied his claims. Officers also rejected rumours they would prefer to sack striking bin workers than make a deal.
It has been 18 months since bin workers downed tools in the city over job losses, pay cuts and job downgrades linked to a massive transformation of waste services.
The failure to end the strike was thought to be a critical factor for voters at the May local elections, with Labour largely out of favour.
Now, senior Labour figures and Unite are poring over events in the run-up to the elections and pressing for answers.
