DRIVERS LICENSED ELSEWHERE ARE WORKING IN TOWN

- STAFF REPORTER

PROPOSALS to tackle out-of-town taxi operators working in Tamworth have received overwhelming backing.

The council will now pen a letter voicing its concerns and campaign for regulatory changes.

At present, licensed cab drivers can work throughout England and Wales without being confined to their licensing area.

This creates a situation where regulations and standards vary between different local authorities.

The council is pushing for rule changes after agreeing to contact the government — demanding reform.

Cllr Richard Kingstone, who put forward the motion, said: “We need to make sure that when those taxis arrive that they are safe and the people driving them are indeed the people driving them and that they are fit and proper persons.
