World Cup set to provide major economic boost
Bangkok Post
|December 24, 2025
Among the world's largest events, the Fifa World Cup attracts a massive global audience, extending far beyond the 48 countries competing for the trophy.
The 2026 edition, scheduled in 16 cities across the US, Canada and Mexico starting in June next year, is expected to draw 6.5 million attendees, contributing up to US$40.9 billion in GDP and creating 824,000 full-time jobs globally.
The economic impact of one of the world's largest events is expected to extend beyond the three co-host countries and the participating nations. One example is Thailand, which has a large football fan base that consistently follows both international and domestic matches.
The broadcasting agreement for exclusive rights to the Premier League was secured by Jasmine International Plc using a budget of 19 billion baht, aiming for 3 million subscribers nationwide.
