UNSC calls for a de-escalation in clashes

»The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has called on Thailand and Cambodia to exercise maximum restraint, deescalate tensions, cease hostilities and solve their border dispute through peaceful means.

The message was conveyed during a closed-door meeting at UN Headquarters in New York on July 25, where all 15 UNSC members, along with Thai and Cambodian representatives, exchanged views on the conflict along the shared border.

Thai Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, on his return from the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York, yesterday held a briefing at the ministry on the UNSC deliberations and the Thai response.

“The Security Council did not adopt any resolution or issue a formal statement, but the overall consensus was clear,” Mr Maris said.
