Rising geopolitical risks help spur gains in gold

Gold prices rose last week, as investors weighed weak US jobs data that supported the case for interest rate reductions, along with rising geopolitical uncertainty.

The afternoon fixing on Friday in London was $4,493.85 an ounce, compared with $4,352.95 a week earlier. Thai selling prices were quoted at 66,900 baht per baht-weight (15.2 grammes), up 1,950 baht from the previous week.
"Payrolls are showing us a poor US job creation environment. Potentially more (geopolitical tension), somewhat higher oil prices, which are inflationary, and an easing Fed -- all are a good combination for precious metals," said Bart Melek, global head of commodity strategy at TD Securities.
