Govt to boost defence spend

The conflict along the Thai-Cambodian border is expected to persist this year even though the two countries agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire that ended at noon on Dec 30.

The Thai government is prioritising greater investment in strengthening the armed forces and tightening measures to reorganise the border.

The National Security Council (NSC) on Wednesday outlined its position on the situation along the border, saying Thailand will adhere to the joint statement agreed with Cambodia, provided Phnom Penh upholds the same commitments.

However, Thai military forces would not hesitate to defend national sovereignty, territorial integrity, national security and public safety if the other side steps out of line.

The remarks came after the expiration of a 72-hour period following the Third Special Meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC).
