Govt backs PP wish list

Party to mull rival offers today

The Pheu Thai Party (PT) says the Pheu Thai-led coalition has accepted the opposition People's Party's (PP) conditions to secure its support for the upcoming prime ministerial vote.

Caretaker Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said the coalition is prepared to dissolve the House within four months as required by the PP — or even sooner if required anew.

Previously, the PP has outlined conditions for backing a new prime minister, emphasising it would only support a candidate if the new prime minister agrees to dissolve the House within four months to allow early elections. It also wants the new cabinet to hold a referendum on a new constitution but said the PP would remain in opposition, scrutinising the government without joining the cabinet.

The negotiations come amid heightened political tensions, with Pheu Thai lobbying the PP to back its candidate, Chaikasem Nitisiri, as the 32nd prime minister.
