Act now on mental health
Bangkok Post

The report of the death of a fourth-year medical student in Songkhla province this week raises alarm bells about growing mental health problems in Thailand.
-
In this tragic case, the 26-year-old student from Prince of Songkhla University was found dead in his car on Tuesday, with the engine and air-conditioning running for several hours. Police believe he died from smoke inhalation. The student reportedly had previously attempted to take his own life. Investigators’ preliminary report suggested mental stress as the likely cause.
This case comes just a week after the Department of Mental Health (DoMH) under the Ministry of Public Health released a report highlighting a critical shortage of psychiatrists in Thailand.
The report revealed that the country has only 845 psychiatrists, equivalent to 1.28 per 100,000 population — far below the World Health Organization's standard of 10 per 100,000.
This raises a pressing question: How can citizens access timely, affordable, and quality mental health care and professional advice?
