Capt Thamanat Prompow and his Klatham Party are battling to fend off accusations of having links to scam networks The latest border flare-up provides a chance for the govt to put pressure on Cambodia over its hosting of transnational scammers

The Klatham Party is scrambling to contain a politically explosive scandal with opponents in the People's Party accusing it of having ties to a cross-border scam network.

Two high-profile figures Deputy Prime Minister Capt Thamanat Prompow and People's Party (PP) MP Rangsiman Rome are at the centre of the war of words.

At the heart of the controversy are PP accusations that senior Klatham figures, including Capt Thamanat, have links to a prominent figure tied to Cambodian scam-centre operations. The opposition is turning this into a central battle in the upcoming election, framing the issue not just as corruption but as a national security threat. Indeed, the anti-scam narrative has turned into a political calling card for the PP as the polls loom.

For Klatham, this isn't simply a reputational issue it threatens to define the party going into what could be a tightly contested election. The opposition is pushing hard to shape public perception, and it's using key voices to do so.

Capt Thamanat, a Klatham patriarch, has strenuously denied any wrongdoing. He has called the allegations "utterly ludicrous", rejecting the notion that he supports or finances criminal call-centre networks.

Rather than simply deny, Capt Thamanat is trying to reframe his role: he claims to have been actively pushing for crackdowns on such scam operations. He said he has advocated for stronger enforcement. He further argues that his political strength has always come from service at the grassroots, not from shadowy financial dealings.
