Southend sub Jack Wood had been denied by the woodwork with his second touch before Harry Cardwell earned the Shrimpers a share of the spoils in the final quarter.
Able only to name two substitutes for the second week running, Blues boss Kevin Maher was delighted to earn a point at fifth-top Gateshead.
