Hosts Gateshead edged. a tight first half in which they were denied by both the referee and the woodwork, but never recovered after Justin Amaluzor pounced within two minutes of the restart.

Altrincham had chances to increase their lead before substitute Justin Donowa scored two minutes into injury time-just a minute after the striker had entered the fray.

Even then there was controversy, this time involving replacement referee Scott Henry, as confusion over a free-kick ended with Donowa tapping home.

Robins boss Phil Parkinson hailed a top performance from his in-form side.
