As a braying donkey, Hurst happened to bear an eerie resemblance to one of our nation's current mayors.
Following a minor injury in the mansion they were house-sitting (the sharp avocado knife, the slippery patio), C and A were forced to hurry into their tiny car (the doughty Kia) and drive through the hills to the emergency room at Cedars-Sinai. As they drove, Hollywood laid on the garish lighting and threatening soundtrack of an atmospheric river, the latest giant storm to lash Los Angeles. The roads were narrow and treacherous, and water cascaded down the mountainside. Heading towards the American health system, they were contemplating another cliff: the fiscal kind. If you're a fan of small government and market rule, hurry to the United States. Even if you have some form of insurance, an accident or an illness can ruin you.

I'm a firestarter
Late spring is bonfire season out here in the sticks. It is the time of year when we rural types - even we half-baked, lily-livered ones who have washed up from the city - set fire to enormous piles of dead wood, felled trees and sundry vegetation that have been building up since last summer, or perhaps even the summer before.
