Hapag-Lloyd bets big on India amid global shipping risks
Indian Transport & Logistics News
|March - April 2026
CEO Rolf Habben Jansen outlines ₹20,000 crore India plans even as Gulf tensions disrupt operations and delay shipments.
"At present, we have six vessels stranded in the Persian Gulf, and our foremost priority is the safety of our crew," said Rolf HabberJansen, Chief Executive Officer of Hapag-Lloyd, underscoring the gravity of the geopolitical crisis and its immediate repercussions on global shipping.
Jansen was in India recently to formalize a letter of intent with the Government of India aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation.
He also addressed a press conference in Mumbai on the Gulf conflict's escalating impact on shipping costs. At the event, he was joined by Sarbananda Sonowal, India's Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. On the sidelines, Jansen spoke exclusively to Indian Transport and Logistics News (ITLN) about the challenges and opportunities ahead.
The company has announced investments of around ₹20,000 crore in India, focusing on three key areas that align with both its global strategy and India's maritime ambitions. These include reflagging up to four vessels under the Indian flag, participating in the development of Vadhavan Port, and investing in ship recycling infrastructure.
Jansen explained that reflagging vessels is not just a regulatory move but also a strategic step. By bringing ships under the Indian flag, the company can increase the number of Indian seafarers on board, supporting local employment while strengthening operational flexibility. It also reflects a broader intent to align more closely with India's policy direction and maritime ecosystem.
