What's cooking, Smriti Irani?

It is telling that the very first line of the much-hyped Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi reboot trailer has Smriti/Tulsi musing: “Apne woh nahi hote jo tasveeron mein saath khade hote hain, apne woh hote hain jo takleefo mein saath khade hote hain [Your dearest ones are not people who stand beside you in photographs, rather those who stand beside you in difficulties].” The copywriter in me can’t help but applaud. What a sly diss, so sweetly delivered, that, too, on soap opera primetime, probably the only slot when Smriti’s erstwhile political ‘dearest ones’ are likely to be watching, given their penchant for all things melodramatic and over the top.

A position of strength

A few days ago, at Chequers in Buckinghamshire, the United Kingdom and India signed the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, a free trade agreement that took nearly three years and 14 rounds of negotiations to complete. At first glance, it may seem like just another bilateral deal, but it carries significance far beyond its text.

No man is an island

Alice, if she had wandered into our wonderland, would have found things getting “curiouser and curiouser”, particularly at the Honourable Bombay High Court. Deploying logic that some may call blinkered, the court peremptorily dismissed a petition by Indian citizens—their political affiliations are immaterial to my point—challenging Mumbai Police’s refusal to allow a protest against the unfolding tragedy in Gaza.

Hot scene and Coldplay

The heat is on! The historic Coldplay concert at the Gillette Stadium in the US will go down as one of the most memorable music events in recent times. And the achievement has nothing to do with music! The global controversy has to do with an incriminating image flashed on a jumbo screen during the show. The villain is technology, and a device called the 'kiss cam' widely used during concerts to capture candid shots of canoodling couples. It is seen as a harmless distraction—a gimmick nobody takes seriously.
