These easy decor updates will make your living room feel warm, welcoming and wonderfully winter-ready

Your living room is by no means just a place where you sit and watch your favourite television show. It’s a hardworking space used for a variety of things. While this is true throughout the year, it rings even more true in winter, when it becomes the backdrop for slow mornings, movie nights, endless cups of tea and every attempt to avoid going outside when the wind picks up. The good news? You don’t need a full renovation to make your space feel warmer, softer and far more inviting. A few clever design tweaks can completely shift the mood.
START WITH TEXTURE
If your living room feels flat in winter, texture is usually what's missing. Designers often say that warmth isn't just visual, it's tactile.
Think chunky knit throws draped casually over the arm of a sofa, velvet cushions that catch the light differently as the day shifts, and wool or bouclé fabrics that invite you to sink in and stay awhile. Even swapping out a few cushion covers can change the entire tone of the room.
Layering is key here. Instead of one or two statement cushions, build depth with multiple textures in similar tones. A linen cushion next to a faux fur one next to something quilted creates a sense of richness without needing bold colour.LAYERED LIGHTING
Nothing kills a cosy atmosphere faster than a single, bright ceiling light. This is why designers almost always rely on layered lighting to create warmth, and you should too.
Start by thinking in levels:
• Ambient lighting: your main ceiling or overhead source, but softened where possible
