A Perthshire retreat with relaxing spa and great food
TUCKED away among the towering pines and winding paths of Perthshire's postcard-perfect countryside, Dunkeld House Hotel is the sort of place that whispers “relax” from the moment you turn off the bustling High Street and make your way up its long drive.
My husband and I often enjoy a visit to Dunkeld, but this summer we decided to go one step further with an overnight escape, complete with dogs, dinner and a dose of spa indulgence.
We booked into the Wade Suite, a spacious, dog-friendly hideaway in a separate building from the main hotel.
It was perfect, with two bathrooms, a comfy sitting-room, a quirky mishmash of decor and a balcony looking out over manicured gardens down to the glorious River Tay.
The hotel had even left a welcome pack for the dogs, complete with treats and a tennis ball — which Pepper sniffed out immediately.
After stretching our legs on a scenic riverbank walk, letting the dogs paddle at a little beach nearby, we headed for the spa — a real highlight.
The pool was just the right temperature for a hot summer's day, and the adjoining hot tub, sauna and steam room added that extra touch of luxury. Floating in the pool while gazing out over green lawns was pure zen.
Suitably unwound, we got ready for dinner and made our way to the restaurant - dogs in tow.
A warm summer evening meant we opted for an outdoor table, enjoying the river view and peace as we tucked into a three-course meal.
I started with a refreshing avocado mousse, while Kieran loved his mackerel pâté with pickles.
