About half of all active geysers on earth are located in Yellowstone, the oldest national park in the USA. Grand Prismatic Spring does not emit fountains, but impresses with its size and colours. The thermal spring measures about 110 metres in diameter. It owes its orange, yellow and green hues to several types of heat-loving bacteria that live in the water, which is cooler toward the edge.
Seven shades in countless layers make Vinicunca a tourist attraction. The mountain rises 5,200 metres in the Andes in southern Peru. It owes each of the shades of colour to the reaction with air and water of a particular mineral in its soil.
