Don't forget to expect the unexpected

Seeking serendipity

In midlife, there's a letting go that needs to happen, a shedding process whereby the old is buffed away, creating a fertile ground for the goals that are authentically yours to bubble up into consciousness. And when they do, it's serendipity that is often the key to fast-tracking your life and causing others to see you as the trailblazer they so want to emulate. In practical terms, serendipity is found in those moments where small coincidences, unexpected connections, or chance encounters change the course of your day, your week — and maybe your life. The essayist Horace Walpole coined the word in 1754, defining it as a 'fortunate happenstance' or a 'pleasant surprise'. Dictionary.com defines it as 'an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident.'
