Scholars start search for long forgotten Celtic words

ΑCADEMICS at Aberystwyth University are compiling a dictionary of the ancient Celtic languages of Britain and Ireland that were spoken before the arrival of the Romans and up to about the year 500.

Although there are no books from the period and only a few coins bearing inscriptions that pre-date the Roman conquest (AD43), research will mainly draw on newly published finds, such as those in the periodical Britannia, plus inscriptions from Roman Britain now online and those from the 'Ogham' alphabet that are found clustered in the southern counties of Ireland and western parts of Britain, such as Pembrokeshire and Cornwall.

There are gamekeepers, now in their sixties, who remember being given a bicycle when they started. They would pedal around their beat checking for grey-partridge nests before cycling on to check their trap lines for stoats and weasels. Some of those keepers now have night-vision scopes for shooting foxes and drones for counting deer.
