Natural selection is enabling trees to resist a fungal disease that has decimated forests across Britain and Europe
Producing wood used by our forebears to make bows and spears, the ash has been one of the most numerous trees in British woodlands for thousands of years.
Though not a long-lived tree compared with the oak, some ash trees in the UK are more than 1,000 years old.
