RAB VEIL RUNNING VEST
£125, RAB.EQUIPMENT/UK
Comfort, a lean weight, pockets, a bounce-free design - we demand a lot from our running vests. Rab's unisex Veil 6L is very hard to fault, however, coming with a wealth of smartly designed pockets, a ventilated and secure shell plus a durable and lightweight 240g construction. The included 500ml flasks (not pictured) sit neatly into the front pockets, while there's compatibility for a bladder in the rear compartment. That quality doesn't come cheap, however, and Rab's 2L bladder will set you back a further £35. MB
VERDICT Pricey but lean, well-crafted and with lots of storage.
BERGHAUS WOMEN'S REMOTE HIKE F23 BACKPACK £110, BERGHAUS.COM
Refreshingly, the lightweight Remote Hike comes in female and male versions, with women getting this bright yellow colourway alongside a black option (just the black version for men) and a female-specific harness, which sits quite high on the body to lessen the load on the lower back. The star of the show is Berghaus's 'Freeflow' frameset at the rear, which creates a large space between back and bag to maximise ventilation. The 23L capacity comes from a vast main compartment and multiple pockets and there's compatibility for a bladder (not included). That price stands up strongly to its daypack rivals as well. KE
VERDICT Comfortable, ventilated and with a sizeable capacity.

Foot and mouth devastated rural Britain. It could happen again
When the new year is welcomed in, we hope for good fortune in the months that lie ahead. But 25 years ago, right across the British countryside, good fortune was nowhere to be seen. Instead, 2001 was to be one of the blackest years ever, as an unexpected epidemic of foot and mouth disease swept the land.

Permissive paths are a precarious privilege we shouldn't abuse
I've always loved a 'permissive path' - a route across private land that the owner, manager or tenant has decided voluntarily to open to all. It's always seemed like the nicest of invitations. A surprise, a welcome, a generous act, as well as an implied pact between walker and landowner: here is a safe route to use, responsibly. The direct opposite of “get off my land”, it is the action of a farmer or land manager interested in and part of their wider community.
