With one of Europe's most comprehensive holly collections, a 40-acre arboretum brimming with evergreens, plus a grass garden where feathery seedheads glow in the pale winter sun, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew definitely warrant an off-season visit. Warm up in the glasshouses while admiring collections of temperate and tropical plants, or explore the new Winter Mound garden, designed to bring colour and scent in the darker months. In February, there's more kaleidoscopic brilliance on show with the start of Kew's annual Orchid Festival; 2023's event takes inspiration from the botanical treasures of Cameroon. kew.org
