1. GO DARK

Like a picture frame, inky backdrops put the focus on the calming nature scene beyond the windows in this Berkshires bedroom, below. “When you use darker colors in the interiors, it really brings your eye to the outside,” says the designer, Alina Wolhardt of Wolf in Sheep Design. The tile behind the fireplace Cunningham selected, above, is similarly weighty, as are the room’s black window frames, allowing the scenery to command attention.
