Decades ago, when I attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, professors were keen on prioritizing academic research, which led to my reading and memorizing extensive materials. These teachers, however great, did not gauge the time and effort necessary for students to master the information. I don't think that was the best way to teach.

Today, I know how coin collectors and investors are overloaded with information and short on time. So, in being your coin expert and teacher, I'm going to present my Top 5 coin-buying tips and combine simplification with succinct structure.

Without providing thousands of pages listing the coins I've examined, I can summarize for you that I've examined tens of billions of dollars' worth of coins in today's dollars and I have sold well over $10 Billion in premium coins based on today's values.

As a co-founder of PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service), I designed PCGS's original grading standards. I'm pleased, too, to be one of the founding co-owners of CAC Grading, LLC.

I know about the inner workings of coin auction companies as I purchased and resold Superior Galleries, one of the oldest American rare-coin auction companies. I bought it around 2001 and sold it in 2007.

As a consultant and minority partner on the purchase of the Ed Trompeter gold collection, my participation helped propel that collection into the Guinness Book of World Records for private treaty coin purchase. I was a consultant, grader and buyer of the El Salvador gold hoard and I served on the board of the Professional Numismatists Guild and the Industry Council for Tangible Assets (now the National Coin & Bullion Association).
