Yet, for many royal watchers, meeting actor Meghan Markle in July 2016 was Harry's tipping point. After years of what he felt was vilification in the media and difficulties within his family, he finally had an excuse to get away from the problems causing him pain. With Meghan, he'd found an out.

There was an outpouring of love when the pair married at Windsor's St George's Chapel in May 2018. Charles even walked Meghan down the aisle when her own father Thomas pulled out, citing health issues. They became the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
