A change of scenery may be just the motivation you need to get moving

Take the PLUNGE

Your weekly workouts don't have to stop just because you've jetted off somewhere. In fact, being in a new location may give you a chance to try something new and help you stay fit while you're away.

Jumping into the hotel or villa pool could be the perfect way to cool off and get fit, without breaking a sweat. Swimming for 30 minutes can burn over 300 calories and target pretty much every muscle in your body. Win, win.

With this training plan - devised by Commonwealth Games silver medallist Penelope Marshall - you'll go from doggy-paddler to swimming pro, while getting fitter, faster and slimmer. If front crawl isn't your forte, you can switch to breaststroke. Not the most confident swimmer? Look for how-to videos on YouTube, which can help you master different techniques.

Opting for the open water instead? You may get a cold-shock response when you first enter - even in warmer climates - which can make you gasp.

The Atlantic can be particularly chilly! As you get in, take a long, slow outbreath to help counter this and don't put your head in the water until your breathing has steadied.

Staying in the UK or heading for cooler climes? Wear a bubble swimming cap if you're putting your head in; if you're not, wear a woolly hat. If you start to feel shivery or slow while in the water, get out while you still feel OK.
