Health professionals including Clinical Psychologists aim to empower their patients and even the general population about giving them scientific knowledge about their diseases and also attempt to remove myths related to the same. Research and clinical evidence has shown that more scientifically the patients and population know about the disease or health related concerns, better they cope with that. There was a time when addressing health concerns meant either booking a doctor’s appointment or digging through dusty medical textbooks at the local library. Fast forward to the digital age—where answers to almost every conceivable health issue are just a click away. With the rise of AI-driven symptom checkers and the omnipresence of search engines, patients no longer walk into clinics with just symptoms they arrive armed with a “diagnosis,” screenshots, and a confident belief that Google knows best. This hyper-accessibility of health information has brought with it a new kind of epidemic: health anxiety, turbocharged by technology. With the internet at their fingertips, individuals often begin with innocent curiosity—perhaps a mild headache or fluttering in the chest. In the past, it might have led to a routine checkup, but now what begins as a basic search for reassurance quickly snowballs into a terrifying string of worst-case scenarios.
