Art tells stories in such intriguing ways. Each creative piece, with its diverse forms and mediums, speaks volume and ignites our imagination, perpetuating its narrative deeper into unique creative expressions. Leonardo da Vinci once famously remarked, "Art is never finished, only abandoned." While his words carry a profound meaning, I see it differently. In a way, art extends its journey through us, the audience, evolving with each encounter. But how do we truly dissect our chemical reaction to art and all the wonders it provokes? Beauty, they say, is in the eye of the beholder, and each artwork speaks to us differently based on our unique experiences. When discussing something so subjective, it's impossible to get one direct answer.
So, I decided to let the practitioners speak for themselves. During this insightful exchange, I found so much to relate to these artists, despite our practice differences. In the hope that you resonate with their sharings, BAZAAR brings together two emerging Malaysian artists, Khabir Roslan and Nazhan Fikri, as they interview each other on how their work reflects their identities and impacts the society.
NAZHAN FIKRI & KHABIR ROSLAN
Pahang-born Nazhan Fikri exudes a calm demeanour, thoughtful in each response. Currently, he is pursuing his Masters in Fine Art, claiming that he has more to learn despite entering the art scene since his degree years. Starting with group exhibitions, Nazhan's determination led him to his first solo exhibition with TAKSU Gallery in 2021. Inspired by memories, experiences and the environment, he credits his mother as his initial inspiration for art.
