Kaur speaks to us about her creative journey and sustainable sensibilities.
ELLE: What key influences have shaped your unique design aesthetic over the years?
Urvashi Kaur (UK): I travelled extensively in my formative years, experiencing different cultures and craft traditions. My family lived a modest nomadic lifestyle that valued creativity in item reuse and respect. I also discovered my love for androgyny through my brother’s hand-me-downs, fostering experimentation.
My interest lies in the anthropological and personal connections made through clothing. It is a reflection of our times, of our advancements during a particular period, and of our customs, which in turn influence my design and the need to bring in a fresh voice. My unique design aesthetic is the culmination of these three I’s - instinct, insight, and interpretation – as filtered through my unique perspective – the fourth I.
ELLE: Apart from design, are you engaged in specific initiatives around sustainability in fashion?
