R. F. Kuang returns to her fantasy roots for her much-awaited novel Katabasis.

“I want to write everything,” says R. F. Kuang, who, at 29, has already published five novels. “I just have too many ideas, and I can only get to them one by one.” Her sixth novel, Katabasis, out in August, is a return to fantasy—the genre in which she made her 2018 debut with The Poppy War, the first of a trilogy.
The Georgetown, Cambridge, and Oxford graduate—who is pursuing a PhD at Yale—critiqued the schools she loves with 2022’s Babel, set in a fictionalized version of Oxford. Then she aimed a satirical eye at the publishing industry with 2023's Yellowface.
