GOODE COP, bad cop!

Matthew Goode's eyes light up when we ask him about the troubled detective at the heart of Netflix's new crime drama Dept. Q.

The Downton Abbey and A Discovery of Witches actor stars as skilled but cantankerous DCI Carl Morck, who is tasked with cracking cold cases in Edinburgh - and it's a role he felt made for.

'I knew I wanted to play him straight away,' says Matthew, 47, during an exclusive interview with TV Times. 'He's aggressive, and pretty rude to most of his colleagues, but I loved his sense of humour. I think he's going to be a bit divisive to viewers at first, but, hopefully, they'll learn to love him!'

Created by American director and screenwriter Scott Frank (The Queen's Gambit) and based on the popular book franchise by Danish novelist Jussi Adler-Olsen, the nine-part series picks up Carl's story following a tragic on-duty shooting that left a young officer dead and Carl's crime-fighting partner DI James Hardy (played by Annika's Jamie Sives) paralysed.

Traumatised by the incident, Carl is told to attend therapy sessions with unorthodox Dr Rachel Irving (Line of Duty's Kelly Macdonald) and removed from active duty.
