Robson Green has been on an eventful journey as DI Geordie Keating in the current ninth run of ITV1’s period whodunnit Grantchester. ‘It’s been an absolute emotional rollercoaster for him,’ shares the actor, reflecting on storylines that have seen his popular character say farewell to friend Reverend Will Davenport and welcome new crime-fighting clergyman Alphy Kottaram all while worrying about the personal struggles of his wife Cathy and trying to crack a string of murder cases!

Yes, dedicated cop Geordie has certainly had his work cut out, and as original cast member Robson joins TV Times for an exclusive chat ahead of this week’s season finale, it’s clear he wouldn’t have it any other way…

It’s been a busy time in Grantchester, with actor Tom Brittney bowing out as fan favourite Will and former Hollyoaks star Rishi Nair joining the cast as charismatic new vicar Alphy. How have you found the changeover?

It was devastating not only saying goodbye to Tom, who’s now a great friend, but also saying goodbye to that character, that journey and Will and Geordie’s relationship. But having this new energy come in with Rishi brings a fresh dynamic to the series. Geordie likes him and knows their partnership will work. Well, it has to… it’s the vicar who solves all the crime!

Is it true you like pulling pranks on Rishi during filming?

Just the one: the crew will be setting up for a scene, and I’ll say to Rishi, ‘They’ve shouted action,’ so he’ll run on set and start doing all this serious acting, but nobody’s actually filming. It’s very funny, but it gets Rishi right wound up!
