Colin Farrell plays a private eye caught up in a web of secrets
MAN OF mystery

NEW DRAMA Sugar From Fri 5 April, Apple TV+ (first two eps from 5 April, then weekly)

One of Hollywood's most popular genres - the private-eye movies of the 40s and 50s - is given a modern spin in Apple TV+'s new LA-set, eight-part mystery drama Sugar, starring Colin Farrell in the title role of private detective John Sugar.

The investigator is hired by renowned film producer Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell) to find out what has happened to his beloved 25-year-old granddaughter Olivia, who's been missing for two weeks.

But as he seeks to locate Olivia, John uncovers the dysfunctional Siegel family's deepest secrets, both recent and long-buried.

ENIGMA Although John is a throwback to classic screen detectives of the film noir era (brief clips of which pepper the series), he doesn't have their cynicism or world-weariness. John doesn't like guns, is chivalrous and goes out of his way to help others.

'As much as he swims in waters of the darkest recesses of human behaviour, he also loves the beauty that human beings can create, explains Farrell, 47.
